But Sportsmail understands that United have decided against a move for Ramos, who will give a press conference on Thursday from 11:30am GMT onwards to say his final goodbyes in the Spanish capital.

Sportsmail understands the club’s hierarchy – including executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward – remain unhappy with his and his brother Rene’s conduct towards them the last time they were in talks to sign him.

The defender himself previously admitted back in 2016 that he nearly made the switch to Old Trafford – and was flattered by the interest.

In an interview with COPE, he said: ‘There was an offer from United. I considered changing for a while but Real Madrid was always my priority and there were no economic reasons.

‘Did I feel cheated [by Madrid]? No, but I did feel disappointed for a while. There were some troubles that came to an end.

‘Flattery from big clubs is always good as this is because you are doing well, but the fans and my club want me.’

United are nevertheless keen to sign a centre-back this summer, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer eyeing a long-term partner for captain Harry Maguire.

Ramos’ Madrid team-mate Raphael Varane and Villarreal’s Pau Torres have also been linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Sportsmail understands Ligue 1 giants PSG are the most likely destination for Ramos, who had been offered a one-year deal by Madrid with a pay-cut of 10 per cent of his current wage in line with the cut offered to other players because of the coronavirus’ impact on Real Madrid’s finances.

The player – who is also understood to have held talks with former club Sevilla –  however wanted a two-year deal and on the same money he currently earns before any reduction in salary.

He had hoped his form during the season’s run-in would force the club’s hand but injury problems kept him out for most of 2021, with his last performance coming in the Champions League semi-final second-leg defeat by Chelsea.

Ramos won four European Cups, four World Club Cups, three European Super Cups, five leagues, two Copa del Reyes at Madrid and leaves them the second most decorated player in their history behind Paco Gento.

The defender has time to consider his next move after being left out of Spain’s Euro 2020 by boss Luis Enrique.
