Manchester woman Elizabeth Merriman stabbed to death

A mother-of-three who was stabbed to death at her home has been named by police as police wait to quiz a 40-year-old man recovering from injuries in hospital. 

Elizabeth Merriman, 39, was found dead at her home in Rochdale, Manchester last month with wounds to her torso and stomach. 

Detectives say they want to question a 40-year-old man who remains in hospital under arrest on suspicion of her murder.

He is due to be questioned as and when his condition improves, police said. 

A post-mortem examination has concluded that Mrs Merriman died as a result of stab wounds to the torso and abdomen.

She was found dead when officers were called to a house on Birch Crescent in Newhey, Rochdale, at around 11.35pm on Sunday, October 22.

The man under arrest was found with serious injuries and was taken to hospital before police arrived at the house.

A JustGiving appeal to raise money for Mrs Merriman’s three sons has been launched by her friends.

A fundraising event for the children and to celebrate her life is also due to be held at the Ko-Ko Lounge on Packer Street, Rochdale, on December 3.

Touching tributes to Mrs Merriman have been paid on the JustGiving site. Daniel Huszar wrote: ‘Such a beautiful lady taken from us far too soon. We will all miss you Liz.’

Helen Emerson added: ‘Still so in shock at Liz being gone.

‘Best wishes and much admiration for all those supporting the boys while coping with their own grief.’

Faz Khan added on the site: ‘You will always be a shining star. Love you. RIP my dear friend, Liz.’

Rochdale Coroners’ Court said the death was referred to the court on October 24.

A date for an inquest opening has not been set as yet. 

Enquiries are continuing.

Birch Crescent is one of a number of streets in a quiet estate off the main Newhey Road, just outside Milnrow.

Detectives at the time described it as an ‘isolated incident’. 

Det Supt Howard Millington, from GMP’s Major Incident Team, said: ‘My thoughts continue to remain with this woman’s loved ones at this devastating time.’
