This Is Us actress and former teen rom com queen Mandy Moore has made some legendary red carpet appearances in her time – as well as some rather disastrous ones.
Luckily, the 33-year-old has learned how to make light of these less-than-stylish turns in the spotlight, even managing to poke a little fun of herself in a funny Today video that sees her critiquing her own, often-awkward sense of style during the 1990s.
The first red carpet appearance on Mandy’s hit list was the Billboard Awards in 1999, when Mandy was a teenager and dressed to the nines for the occasion.

Rock chick: In 2000 Mandy experimented with leather and fringe (left) and a more darling style with rhinestones for a more sophisticated Hollywood look
Far from the chic ensembles modeled by teenage stars in this day and age however, standing out in the 1990s – at least as far as Mandy was concerned – called for a floor length pink-and-green plaid skirt and a pink turtleneck.
The actress cracked up when she saw the photograph of her first Hollywood glamour moment before explaining her bizarre outfit choice.
‘I remember seeing Gwyneth Paltrow in something similar,’ she explained. ‘And that’s the inspiration behind this look although, she wasn’t wearing what looks like a tablecloth and a Swarovski crystal-bejeweled turtleneck.
‘I remember I had pink Prada sandals on underneath and I was so excited because they were the fanciest shoes I’d ever had in my life,’ she added gushingly.
After a laugh the star gets comically critical saying: ‘This was a real low point for me, I’m going to be honest. This was not a highlight of my style career.’
Mandy is a drastically different vision two years later in 2001, looking older, hipper and very trendy in her go-to color of pink.
Donning a black tube top with pink stars splattered on top, pink trousers, pointy black heels and a practiced Hollywood smolder, Mandy was ready to hit a Los Angeles MTV event.
‘Getting a little sexier, showing a little bit of midriff, I mean it was the early 2000s,’ Mandy said of her improved fashion choice.
‘Pink, I really loved pink, obviously. And lip gloss,’ she added.
Wild Thoughts: Mandy cracks up at her feather halter look and says it wasn’t a highlight of her fashion career
The dark days: At the 2000 I Wanna Be With You launch the blonde donned a feather top, asymmetrical denim skirt, and feather sandal look won as Mandy’s most cringe-worthy fit
Sweet and spicy: From daring necklines to asymmetrical skirt cuts, Mandy captured 90s fashion perfectly with her first red carpet debuts
Hollywood starlet: As the red carpet events became more frequent Mandy is pictured more confident and daring with her fashion choices with each appearance
The actress may have loved pink, but she didn’t shy away from more mod ensembles.
At the Kids’ Choice Awards in 2000 she strutted out in a very adult and dark look with a midriff baring top and dark purple fringe leather pants.
‘I remember these fringed leather pants were custom-made,’ she admitted.
The pants were fashioned after a Ralph Lauren runway look.
‘I was like, “I think we can do a better version. It can be metallic purple.” But I was 16 or 17, so you can’t really blame me for that, I guess,’ she said.
That same year at a New Years Eve party Mandy rocked an ensemble that seems right up today’s fashion alley with a slightly off shoulder top and matching skirt. To ring in the celebration, her outfit was studded with sparkly rhinestones.
‘You’re going old school!’ she said to the camera when she saw her matching outfit.
‘I was helping the New Year’s festivities for MTV. I would totally rock that now, actually. Good job, Mandy! I feel like I was sort of ahead of the curve there, stylistically,’ she said.
‘Or it all comes back around again, who knows?’
Maybe she was trendsetting, but it might take a while for her look from the launch of I Wanna Be With You to come back in style.
Trendsetter: Today Mandy’s style couldn’t be more different from her beginning pop star days. Since then she’s swapped blonde for brunette and 90s cuts for elegant silhouettes in 2017
One look at the photograph of her old ensemble and she laughed saying ‘This is a whopper.’
The young blonde belle wore a feather halter top, asymmetrical denim skirt, and heeled sandals with feather detailing that matched her wild top.
‘Remember when it was in vogue to cut off the waistband of your jeans and denim skirts? This sort of asymmetrical line — that’s something,’ she said on her outfit.
‘And I believe you can’t even really see, but there is a feathered detail on my platform sandals that’s sort of tied in with the feathered halter top that I’m wearing.’
‘This was not a highlight for me either,’ she added.
At the end of the video she has a laugh at her wardrobe choices and said ‘Thank you so much for making me feel fantastic about my style choices as a teenager, guys.’
The actress style has no doubt evolved. Today her tresses are shorter and chestnut brown and her style is more feminine and nostalgic compared to the edgy, skin baring looks of the rebel 90s.
