Manhunt for person randomly shooting California drivers

Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims (pictured) said at least 10 vehicles have been damaged so far

A person in a large pickup truck is randomly shooting at drivers in northern California, law enforcement officials said on Thursday.

Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims said during a news conference that at least 10 vehicles have been targeted so far with the initial round of shootings occurring between Nov. 27 and Dec. 7 in Fresno and Madera counties.

Investigators are currently on the lookout for the owner of a dark-colored, four-wheel-drive pickup with oversize tires and extended cab, The Fresno Bee reported.

Madera County Sheriff Jay Varney and California Highway Patrol Capt. Eric Johnson said their departments are also involved in the investigation.

One person has already been injured in the shootings after she sustained shrapnel wounds from broken glass.

Madera County Sheriff Jay Varney (R) and California Highway Patrol Capt. Eric Johnson say they are aiding in the manhunt for the shooter

‘If this keeps going, we are going to have a murder investigation,’ Mims warned.

In each case, victims reported hearing loud bangs as a vehicle passed them heading the opposite direction, according to the Fresno Bee.

Mims said that law enforcement in the area has made the search a top priority in their respective departments.

‘We are highly motivated to find who is doing this,’ Madera County Sheriff Varney said, with Mims adding ‘we have committed significant resources’ to the manhunt.

Detectives say that their work has been somewhat hamstrung by late reporting by victims, with some car owners waiting up to three days to inform police.

Police have reviewed video by a number of private home owners along the shooter’s route, and have urged others to come forward with surveillance footage to contact police.

‘To the suspect of these cowardly acts: We are all working together to find you,’ added Mims.

Police are offering $3,000 for anyone who provides information leading to an arrest and have urged the public to reach out to law enforcement with any tips at 559-498-7867 (STOP).
