Marc Guehi has given an update on his Crystal Palace future amid Newcastle’s third £55m bid being rejected and questioned whether he is a ‘superstar’ after comments made by Steve Parish.

Mail Sport revealed on Monday that the Magpies had made a third offer, comprising of an initial £55million plus an additional £5m in add-ons, for the Palace central defender.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is desperate to bring Guehi to St James’ Park after he played a pivotal role in England’s run to the Euro 2024 final, where they were beaten by Spain.

Palace chairman, Parish, has since hailed Guehi as a ‘superstar player’ and insisted that Newcastle will have to pay ‘superstar money’ if they want to secure the 24-year-old’s signature.

Speaking on Tuesday, Parish – who values Guehi at a minimum £65million – told Sky Sports: ‘If you want a superstar player, you’ve got to pay superstar money.

‘This is a player we love a lot. If we start the season with him, we’ll be a better team.’

Guehi has now admitted he is ‘humbled’ by Parish’s glowing review, labelling his comments as ‘really kind’ and insisting that his full attention is on Palace’s Premier League opener against Brentford on Sunday.

‘I am (happy). It is good to be back here, to be playing again with team-mates and a (pre-season) run-out in front of some of the fans again, so it is all positive,’ Guehi told Sky Sports.

‘I am humbled by that (Parish comments) – for someone who is a big part of this football club, for him to say something like that is amazing for someone like me.

‘I am not sure I am a superstar, but it was some really kind words from the chairman.’

‘There is a real culture of togetherness here, that is from the academy, the women’s (team) and men – everyone is really on the same page, a real family. It is an amazing place to be.

‘It is always important to focus on what is truly important and that is the game at the weekend, making sure that for the rest of the season, we are at it,’ he said.

It remains to be seen how Newcastle now react to Parish’s public rejection of their latest offer with sporting director Paul Mitchell, who is handling the deal, believed to be keen on holding a final round of talks in hope of clinching the transfer.

Guehi’s existing contract at Selhurst Park runs until 2026 after he joined the club from Chelsea for £18m three years ago.
