Maren Morris says she ‘doesn’t have to protect anyone anymore’ on her new album – a month after coming out as bisexual and leaving country music genre

Maren Morris spoke out about her new EP called Intermission, which is set to be released on Friday.

The singer, 34, posted a video to her Instagram page about her upcoming album, revealing that it will kick off a new chapter in her life.

Maren split from husband Ryan Hurd in October 2023 and finalized the divorce in January 2024, and shared son Hayes, four, with him.

During her Instagram video, she said the album is different in that she doesn’t have to ‘protect anyone anymore,’ appearing to hint about her ex.

One month prior, Maren came out as bisexual – via her Instagram page, writing ‘Happy to be the B in LGBTQ+’ during Pride Month.

Maren shared photos of herself as she held on to Pride flags while in Phoenix for her RSVP Redux tour; she added: ‘Happy Pride.’

In September 2023, Maren also revealed that was was planning to take a ‘step back’ from country music.

In November, she clarified that she doesn’t plan on going pop – in an interview with Variety magazine.

‘I’m not getting out of Dodge. I love living in Nashville, and I don’t consider myself an expat of country music,’ she told the outlet.

‘There’s so many amazing people here making music that matters. I’m a piece of this town, and I want to make it better in the same ways I want the music industry to be better,’ she added.

On Monday, Maren spoke directly to the phone in the video: ‘Calling this project Intermission was intentional. It’s obviously a lyric at the end oft he song Cut!’.

Adding: ‘But it’s also meaning that there’s more to come.’

Maren’s song Cut! features fellow singer Julia Michaels.

Maren continued: ‘It’s a break in the act, and for me, it’s definitely an act break and new chapter of my life, and I’m so ready to see what’s on the other page.’

‘I just am so proud of this. music. It wasn’t easy to write because I’m going through a lot, and this is the diary of that.’ 

She continued: ‘But it’s also the most fun music as well as well as the most heartbreaking because I’m allowing myself to go there – ’cause I don’t have to protect anyone anymore. It’s just about my feelings. So I hope you love it.’
