Margot Robbie’s Barbie smashes box office records and makes a whopping $21.5M in opening weekend

Margot Robbie’s Barbie has smashed box office records after taking in a whopping $21.5million in its opening weekend. 

The comedy, which is directed by Greta Gerwig, has become the biggest weekend opening of any film this year in Australia, according to the Courier Mail. 

Barbie took $11.1million gross on Saturday which made it the ‘biggest Saturday’ ever recorded at the Australian box office, beating Avengers Endgame from 2019.

Meanwhile, its $10.5million take the following day was the country’s biggest ever Sunday, beating Star Wars: The Force Awakens from 2015.

The PG-rated film has had sellout sessions across the country with Barbie hype reaching fever pitch last week.

According to Vulture, the film is ‘a fish-out-of-water story about a doll who is ousted from toy society for not being perfect enough.’

Oscar winner Ryan Gosling is starring opposite Margot as he takes on the role of Barbie’s boyfriend Ken. 

Will Ferrell is playing the CEO of the toy company that may or may not be Mattel.

Little Women and Ladybird filmmaker Greta Gerwig directed the project, and wrote the script for the film with her longtime partner Noah Baumbach.

Other members of the cast include Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Emma Mackey, Kingsley Ben-Adir and America Ferrera.

They will star alongside Rhea Perlman, Ariana Greenblatt, Ana Cruz Kayne, Alexandra Shipp, Ritu Arya, Sharon Rooney, Connor Swindells, Scott Evans and Jamie Demetriou.
