The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School ice hockey team won the Florida championship, 11 days after a gunman killed 17 of their classmates and staff members.
The fourth-seeded Eagles upset top-ranked East Lake 3-1 in the Sunday morning semifinals at a minor-league rink near Fort Myers, then routed Tampa Jesuit 7-4 in the afternoon finals.
Marjory Stoneman Douglas began as the last seed in the four-team bracket tournament after losing its first three games.
The team, however, fought valiantly to inch back towards the top and upset top-seeded East Lake to earn a spot in the final.
In the championship, Marjory Stoneman Douglas took a commanding 4-0 lead in the first period and didn;t look back as goalie Nathan Shield’s recorded 18 saves against the Jesuits, according to Sports Illustrated.
Adam Hauptman recorded a hat trick to lead the team, while Matthew Hauptman and Matthew Horowitz contributed two goals each, Sports Illustrated added.

The hockey team triumph comes less than two weeks after 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz stormed his former high school with an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle and killed 17 people.
