Mark Wood is ruled OUT for the remainder of England’s Test series against Sri Lanka after sustaining a strained thigh muscle during Old Trafford victory

  • Mark Wood sustained the injury late on in the third day of England’s first Test
  • The 34-year-old was subsequently unable to play any further part in the match
  • His injury will leave the door open to a recall for Nottinghamshire’s Olly Stone

England fast bowler Mark Wood has been ruled out for the remainder of the Test series against Sri Lanka through injury, opening the door to a recall for Olly Stone.

Wood, 34, sustained the injury late on the third day of his side’s five-wicket win at Old Trafford and was unable to play any further part in the match. Scans have since confirmed Wood suffered a strain of his right thigh muscle.

Stone looks the man most likely to deputise for Wood in the final two matches of the series, which resumes on Thursday with the second Test at Lord’s.

The Nottinghamshire seamer’s career, like Wood’s, has been blighted by injuries but Stone is highly rated by England for his ability to consistently bowl above 90mph.

Stone has claimed 10 wickets at an average 19.4 in his three Tests for England, the last of which was against New Zealand at Edgbaston in 2021.

Meanwhile, Leicestershire left-armer Josh Hull has received his first Test call-up to replace Wood in the squad for the remainder of the series.
