Is Aleks Markovic’s weight loss problematic? Why Married At First Sight bride’s confession that she dropped 9kg because of stress from her break-up is ‘troubling’
Aleks Markovic has lost nine kilograms since appearing on Married At First Sight, which she attributes in part to the ‘stress’ of her break-up with Ivan Sarakula.
And on Friday, journalist Edwina Carr Barraclough described this admission as ‘troubling’ because it implies that weight loss is a ‘gleaming trophy’ for women going through heartbreak.
In an essay for Whimn, Barraclough wrote: ‘This need to high five women for losing weight – whatever the cost – is dangerous and only feeds into the misguided idea that a woman is only as good as the number on the scales staring back at her.’

While Barraclough said there was nothing wrong with wanting to lose weight for health reasons, she objected to Aleks’ weight loss being glorified as a ‘revenge body’ when it was actually the result of ‘unbearable’ stress.
She explained: ‘For Aleks, this stress happened to manifest in “extensive weight loss”. Her shrinking body was merely a symptom of the distress she was feeling, yet it’s lauded as the gleaming trophy of the story.’
Aleks told NW magazine earlier this week that she had lost ‘about nine kilos’ after filming Married At First Sight.

‘I don’t eat when I’m stressed, so the break-up definitely contributed to my extensive weight loss,’ she said.
Aleks was partnered with real estate agent Ivan Sarakula on MAFS, which was filmed between September and December last year, but they split before their final vows.
They reconciled off camera in early January, only to break up for good a month later.

However, the singing coach has admitted her weight loss wasn’t only because of stress related to Married At First Sight.
She also credits her pescetarian diet with helping her shed the kilos, and dances for 20 minutes at least three times per week.
‘I don’t eat dairy or any meat products,’ she said. ‘I start my day with a soy latte, then I eat my lunch at 12pm which is vegetables and fish. Dinner is the same.’
