Martha Stewart shades Ina Garten: Drinking ‘to cope with things like the pandemic’ is ‘not charming’

Martha Stewart appeared to take a dig at Ina Garten in a new interview, calling Garten’s pandemic tip to drink more cocktails ‘not charming.’

Earlier this month, Garten, 73, wrote on Instagram that her ‘formula’ these days includes alcohol, binge-watching, and playing Sudoku.

But speaking to People, Stewart, 80, balked at the suggestion that booze was the answer.

‘I do not agree about taking to drink to cope with things like the pandemic,’ she said. ‘To me that’s not charming.’

Stewart may agree more with some of Reese Witherspoon’s habits.

In early January, the 45-year-old actress listed some of the good habits she’s been working on, including starting the day with a big glass of water, getting ten minutes of outdoor light, spending at least a half hour reading a day, and going to bed early.

Garten was responding to Witherspoon’s post when she she shared her less ambitious routine.

‘To quote @reesewitherspoon – that sounds great but I’m probably not doing any of those things! LOL!! My formula is easier to follow,’ she wrote.

‘1. Drink more large cosmos 2. Stay up late watching addictive streaming series, 3. Stay in bed in the morning playing Sudoku instead of reading a good book. 4. Spend more time (safely) with people you love. In a pandemic, I do what I can!’ she said.

But when asked about Garten’s cosmo tip while promoting her new chardonnay, Stewart had other ideas.

Garten said she likes to drink more large cosmos, stay up late binge-watching, stay in bed playing Sudoku, and spend time with loved ones

‘To me it’s continuing to work really hard, to be as productive as I possibly can be, to enjoy my grandchildren,’ she said.

‘[I’m] not a big drinker. I never have been,’ she added, explaining that she will usually have one or two glasses of wine with dinner.

She also adds ice to make it last longer.

Stewart went on to say that she gets up early ‘every single day’ and has a lot of ‘energy’ and ‘curiosity.’

‘I live on a farm, so the farm life starts early. At 7 a.m. we’re all at work — snow, rain, sunshine, we’re here. Animals don’t wait,’ she said.

Garten had charmed social media users in the early days of the pandemic by sharing a video of herself mixing an enormous cosmo.

‘It’s always cocktail hour in a crisis!’ she captioned the video.

‘During these stressful times, it’s really important to keep traditions alive. My favorite tradition is the cocktail hour, so I’m gonna make you my favorite Cosmopolitan,’ she said in the clip.

‘So you need a big pitcher, because I like to make a lot of Cosmos. You never know who’s gonna stop by,’ she said. ‘Wait a minute, nobody’s stopping by!’

She told viewers to pour in two cups of Belvedere vodka, but emptied an entire bottle into her own pitcher.

She then demonstrated adding one cup of Cointreau, one cup of Ocean Spray cranberry juice cocktail, and a half a cup of freshly-squeezed lime juice.

Mix it up: She said to shake the cocktail for 30 seconds

Yum! She then poured it into an enormous glass

‘I mean, how easy is this?’ she said.

Next, she pulled out an enormous cocktail shaker, already half filled with ice, and poured the mixture in to shake it up.

‘You have to shake it for 30 seconds,’ she said. ‘You have lots of time, it’s not a problem.’

Ina finally bought out a huge martini glass, a novelty item that’s much bigger than any normal martini glass.

‘I would say, in these times, this is really important,’ she said.

Ready to drink, she lifted the heavy glass with both hands and told viewers: ‘Stay safe, have a very good time, and don’t forget the cocktails.’
