Martin Lewis has slammed Twitter as ‘horrible’ after trolls accused him of making up a story about his nine-year-old daughter.

The presenter, who is married to TV presenter Lara Lewington, has become a TV stalwart with his expert financial advice for Brits looking to save money.

The expert usually tweets about finance hacks and the economy, but earlier this week he shared how he had asked his daughter what she thought the purpose of the government was.

However he was later forced to delete the tweet, and went on to share a follow-up, saying other users on the social media site had suggested he was lying about his nine-year-old.

He tweeted that he was amazed at her ‘brilliant and succinct’ reply that ‘the government’s job is to help shape the country’.

However, Twitter trolls seized on his proud dad moment to mock the broadcaster.

Lewis later hit back at the abuse online. He said: ‘Twitter really is a horrible place sometimes. I tweeted a nice little comment about my little girl.

‘Only to get lots of @_DHOTYA replies.’

DHOTYA stands for the Didn’t Happen Of The Year Awards, an account that shares posts that seem to be fake.

Often the account posts comments from overzealous parents.

While the account itself didn’t share his post, trolls tagged it in their mean replies.

The page’s owner even said they were ‘distancing myself from any of this’ by clarifying ‘if anybody has ever earned immunity from DHOTYA this year it’s Martin Lewis’.

Lewis later added: ‘Why would I bother making something like that up.

‘I was proud of her. I’ve deleted it, as I can’t be bothered with people who want to ruin it.’

Martin has quickly become a household name thanks to his tireless money saving contributions and advice via a number of outlets, including BBC Radio 1 and Radio 2, The Sunday Times, The Guardian and the Sunday Express.

He has also stepped in to present Good Morning Britain on numerous occasions and often features on This Morning.

He wed wife Lara, who also boasts a career in journalism, in May 2009 and they have a daughter Sapphire, nine.

Lara is also a television presenter and co-hosts BBC’s technology programme Click.

In 2003, the blonde beauty joined Five as their weather presenter, where she spent six years.

She also became the channel’s showbiz correspondent, before taking the same tole on Sky News.
