Marvel, Netflix pull The Punisher from New York Comic Con

Marvel and Netflix pulled The Punisher on Wednesday from New York Comic Con following the Las Vegas shooting massacre.

‘We are stunned and saddened by this week’s senseless act in Las Vegas. After careful consideration, Netflix and Marvel have decided it wouldn’t be appropriate for Marvel’s The Punisher to participate in New York Comic Con,’ they said in a joint statement.

‘Our thoughts continue to be with the victims and those affected by this tragedy,’ the statement added.

Not appropriate: Marvel and Netflix announced Wednesday that The Punisher starring Jon Bernthal, shown in July in San Diego, has been pulled from the upcoming New York Comic Con

The Punisher features Jon Bernthal, 41, as Frank Castle and his damaged vigilante alter ego.

A trailer released last month featured the brutal anti-hero firing an assault rifle while seeking revenge on those responsible for killing his family.

Other Marvel shows including Agents of SHIELD, The Gifted and its upcoming Hulu series Runaways remained scheduled for appearances at New York Comic Con that runs Thursday through Sunday.

The Punisher due to the nature of the character and its presence on Netflix has a more violent tone.

The world premiere of Blade Runner 2049 on Tuesday in Hollywood also was scaled back and held without a red carpet out of respect for the shooting victims.

ESPN’s Monday Night Football and ABC’s Monday episode of Dancing With The Stars both opened with a moment of silence for the victims of the tragedy.

The Punisher character played by Bernthal first appeared on season two of Marvel’s Daredevil on Netflix.
