  • They stormed into the house, tied the couple up and forced them to open a safe
  •  The men fled with the couple’s life savings – a large amount of cash and jewellery

A group of men who broke into a couple’s home and stole their life savings tied the pensioners up with an electrical power cord before fleeing with jewellery and cash.

Henry Spierenburg, 69, and his wife Sue, 66, were at their Mount Cotton home when three men used a baseball bat to smash through glass in their front door.

The trio, who had their faces covered, stormed into the property south of Brisbane and went up the stairs where they confronted Mr Spierenburg.

After kicking down the door and threatening the couple with a knife, the men forced Mr and Mrs Spierenburg to open their safe, Nine News reported.

The pensioners, who have been married for 50 years, were then tied up back-to-back with a yellow electrical power cord and left them on the couch.

‘I just knew we were in very big danger,’ said Mrs Spierenburg.

The robbers then fled with a large amount of jewellery and cash after demanding to see inside the couple’s gun safe, which was empty.

Police are investigating, and attempting to find out whether the three men knew there was a safe inside the home.
