Mason Greenwood has been handed his first LaLiga start for Getafe in their encounter with Athletic Club on Wednesday evening.

The Manchester United loanee has been used as a substitute Getafe’s two previous matches but has been given the nod to start on the wing by manager Jose Bordalas.

Greenwood’s last start came in Man United’s 1-0 win over West Ham at Old Trafford on January 22, 2022 with his inclusion in Getafe’s beginning side coming 613 days later.

His arrival in Spain has been celebrated by supporters of the club based just outside of Madrid with Greenwood showing signs of settling in as he attempts to rebuild his career after it was previously disrupted by his arrest on charges of attempted rape and assault last year.

The charges were eventually dropped by the Crown Prosecution service. United held an in-depth internal investigation following the allegations that were made against him and six months later it was mutually decided Greenwood would continue his career away from Old Trafford.

Greenwood has made an instant impact in his new surroundings and was tipped to soon make his first start for the club after impressing in a 4-3 defeat against Real Sociedad last time out.

However, rival supporters have given him a discerning welcome to LaLiga with many evidently unhappy with Getafe’s decision to sign the player due to the circumstances surrounding his departure from England.

Some Osasuna supporters directed chants of ‘Greenwood die’ towards the Man United academy star during his first appearance for the club.

The Spanish Football Federation subsequently investigated the incident and Osasuna manager Jagoba Arrasate condemned the chants directed towards the player.
