A massive fire has torn through a lot in western Sydney, causing chaos on a major motorway right in the middle of peak hour traffic.

A huge blaze broke out in the suburb of Horsley Park on Wednesday evening with plumes of smoke billowing out onto the M7 motorway, according to 9 News.

Drivers are being advised to take extra care while driving past the fire at Wallgrove Road in Eastern Creek.

Thick plumes of black smoke are billowing into the sky and out over the motorway, causing a potential hazard for motorists.

No properties are under threat from the huge inferno.

The fire broke out in a large pile of timber pallets at the lot.

Fire crews are currently at the scene and are battling to contain the blaze.
