Matildas star Michelle Heyman gets engaged to her girlfriend to cap off a stunning year for Aussie football’s comeback queen

  • Michelle Heyman is engaged to long term partner Christine Aldridge
  • The Matildas star, 36, represented Australia at the Paris Olympics
  • Heyman has scored a record 110 goals in her A-League career

Matildas star Michelle Heyman has confirmed her engagement to long-term partner Christine Aldridge.

It caps off a stunning 2024 for the veteran striker, 36, who scored the winner for Australia against Zambia at the Paris Olympics.

Heyman was called into Tony Gustavsson’s squad late following an ACL injury to Sam Kerr and took her opportunity in the qualifying matches with both hands, scoring five goals in two games versus Uzbekistan.

Taking to Instagram recently, Heyman shared a photo of herself kissing Aldridge’s cheek while showing off her sparkling ring.

Heyman captioned the photo with six digits: ‘6/9/24.’

Matildas teammate Katrina Gorry was quick to pass on her best wishes, posting in response: ‘Love love love. Congratulations my favourite people.’

Midfielder Chloe Logarzo posted: ‘Congratulations darls.’

It comes as Heyman was poised to sign with West Ham in the Women’s Super League this season – but was only offered a short-term contract with the Hammers.

‘The deal was just to December and for myself, if I was to sign that deal, the transfer window wouldn’t allow me to play in Australia,’ she told A-Leagues.

‘So it was a big decision…..if I was to sign the contract with West Ham, then I wouldn’t be able to play football until April, when the season is over.

‘For me, playing games is more important.’

The prolific striker – who has scored 110 goals domestically in her career – will again turn out for her beloved Canberra United, with the women’s competition on local shores kicking-off on November 1.

‘I am excited to be continuing my football journey with Canberra United, a club that is incredibly close to my heart,’ said Heyman, who also has 67 Matildas caps to her name.

‘I have made many memories playing for Canberra United and am looking forward to creating many more with my teammates and the fans.

‘I am feeling incredibly good, physically and mentally, and am ready to hit the ground running.’
