MATT ROBERTS: Why Jane Fonda is an inspiration at 80

My mum, and millions of other women in the 1980s, slavishly followed Jane Fonda’s aerobic exercise plans. ‘Feel the burn,’ she instructed. And they did, in the hope they’d look as good as she did.

Well Fonda, below – who turned 80 on December 21 – looks just as incredible as she did then. But, having had a hip and knee replacement, her workouts have matured along with her audience: she’s now an advocate of yoga and Pilates-inspired exercise.

Fonda has been open about suffering from bulimia in her Barbarella days, drug-taking and being abused as a child – before turning it all around and embracing healthy living.

And it would be hard to argue that she’s not a great advert for that lifestyle choice.

Anyone with scepticism about what exercise can do should take a look at the most incredible octogenarian.
