Holiday of a lifetime ends in tragedy for young Aussie killed in a horror scooter crash as his final Instagram post is revealed

A young Aussie has tragically died after he lost control of the scooter he was on and crashed into a cement pillar while holidaying in southern Italy, just days after he revealed he was ‘feeling at home’ in the region.

Matthew Borromei, 25, from Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Western Australia, died in Sicily while travelling to the town centre of Taormina.

The crash occurred shortly after 9pm on July 5.

Local media Agenzia Nazionale Stampa Associata reported he died at the scene before emergency responders arrived.

Just days earlier, Mr Borrome had raved about Italy’s southern region to his family back home.

As recent as June 28, he took to Instagram to share a photo of his travels of Molise. 

‘Feeling at home with the family in this gorgeous town,’ he captioned the post.

His family confirmed his death in a social media post, noting that the area was one of his ‘favourite places he discovered on his European travels’.

‘Mum and I love you so much,’ his father Rino posted on Facebook.

‘Miss you. Forever in our hearts and thoughts.’

Many tributes revolved around his love of soccer and AFL, including two posts from the teams he played for.

His AFL team, Railways Football Club said he will be ‘greatly missed by many for his energy, smile and zest for life’.

‘The Railways FC pays respects to Matt Borromei, his family, friends and former teammates,’ the post read.

‘Sadly Matt lost his life touring in Italy and he will be greatly missed by many for his energy, smile, and zest for life.

‘… the biggest collective hug around everyone who loved and knew Matt including many playing with the club today.

‘RIP Matt. We love you mate.’

The club also announced players will wear black armbands this weekend in all grades to pay their respects to Matt.

While Twin City Saints soccer club also shared a touching tribute paying respects to one of their original members.

‘Incredibly sad news for one of our OGs [originals] … Heart goes out to the family and, of course, you boys,’ the Twin City Saints posted on its Facebook page.

‘Horrible to lose such a good mate.

‘Love from two coaches who were fortunate enough to spend time with such a fantastic bloke and a top-quality player.’

Mr Borromei was also a much-loved colleague 

‘We are beyond devastated with the tragic loss of our charismatic colleague and team member Matt Borromei,’ Board Constructions posted.

‘We will all treasure the last four years Matt spent with us, blessed and proud to know him as a friend.

‘Matt was loved by all and will be sorely missed, rest in peace.’
