Matthew Guy QUITS as Victorian Liberal leader after a second crushing victory to rival Dan Andrews, plunging his party into even more chaos

  • Matthew Guy announced on Sunday he will resign as Victorian Liberal leader
  • He congratulated opponent Daniel Andrews for his election win on Saturday

Victorian Liberal leader Matthew Guy will resign from his role after a humiliating upset to Daniel Andrews at the state election.

Mr Guy announced he would not be running again as leader as he congratulated Labor following their election win on Saturday night.

‘I want to put on record my deep appreciation to all the Liberal and National Party candidates, their campaign teams and volunteers for the tireless work they have done, particularly over recent weeks,’ he said on Sunday.

‘The respectable statewide two party preferred swing to the Coalition of 3-4 per cent was most profound in the exceptional swings to the Liberal Party in Melbourne’s north and west.

‘This represents a huge future electoral opportunity for the Liberal Party.

‘As soon as it is clearer which Liberal Party candidates will form the next parliamentary party room, I will call them together to elect their new leadership team. I will not be a candidate for the position of leader.’
