The New York City Mayor made the bizarre confession during his weekly press briefing to reporters on on Tuesday in which the embattled mayor explained how he has stopped reading or listening to any news whatsoever.

'Four weeks ago, I stopped reading papers. I stopped listening to the news,' Adams said. 'I sleep so much better. I just feel so much at ease.' Adams said he compared reading the news to eating junk food. 'I was going through mental obesity,' he added.

The stunning admission from the mayor of America's largest city indicates to some that he's sticking his head in the sand as turmoil rages on around him. 'Oh such a good ignorant statement from a mayor,' one person said in reaction to the admission. 'Ah! Nothing like deliberately removing yourself from information that might be important to do one's job, very professional,' another raged.

The timing of Adams' so-called 'news diet' could not be more dramatic as his own political career hangs by a thread. Adams pleaded not guilty to bribery and other charges after a 2024 indictment accused him of accepting over $100,000 in illegal campaign contributions and lavish travel perks from a Turkish official such as expensive flight upgrades, luxury hotel stays and even a trip to a bathhouse.

The case, brought during the Biden administration, was on track for an April trial until Donald Trump's Justice Department moved last month to drop it, arguing that the case was interfering with the mayor's ability to aid the president's crackdown on illegal immigration. He is alleged to have returned the favors by helping Turkey get a consulate open without passing a fire inspection.

In a written order on Tuesday, US District Judge Dale E. Ho said he has reviewed filings from the parties and a court-appointed legal expert, all of whom favor dismissal, and 'does not at this time believe that oral argument is necessary.' The only disagreement among the parties and the expert, former US Solicitor General Paul Clement, appeared to be whether a dismissal should be permanent.

The Justice Department is seeking the option to refile the case after this November's mayoral election. Clement recommended that Ho prevent the charges from being refiled - known in legal parlance as dismissal with prejudice - so they don't hang over Adams 'like the proverbial Sword of Damocles.' Adams' lawyers have also asked for a permanent dismissal of the case.
