Brian McKiterick has revealed a Victoria Police officer ordered him to stop expressing his views on the rainbow flag issue.

The ex-mayor of Surf Coast Shire Council broke his silence to the Geelong Advertiser saying that the police gag order came after mentioning that the rainbow flag for gay marriage was not council business. 

‘I was instructed in May to not make any further comment in public, or comment in council, with respect to the rainbow flag issue,’ he said.

‘I had the meeting with police senior management and was informed the gag order came from senior management of the region.’

Cr McKiterick has been a councillor for 10 years and mayor for two twice, and was adamant he did not breach any police policy.

Western Victoria state Liberal MP Simon Ramsay accused Police Minister Lisa Neville of ordering Mr McKiterick’s apparent gag

Ms Neville was rejected the allegation and expects Mr Ramsay to apologise.
