‘It’s because McDonald’s cook their fries with beef flavoring mixed within their vegetable oil.

‘That’s why their fries taste so good but also so different from everybody else’s. It’s probably bad news for vegetarians but the more you know.’

Jordan added that in the UK, Canada, and Australia, the popular burger joint doesn’t use the beef flavouring in their French fries, explaining, ‘They cook the fries with regular oil so if you’re vegetarian, you can have the fries in those places.’

‘When our suppliers partially fry our cut potatoes, they use an oil blend that contains beef flavoring,’ the company states on its FAQ.

‘This ensures the great-tasting and recognizable flavor we all love from our world famous fries.’

Many people were horrified over the news, and some vegetarians admitted that they had been eating the fries without realizing. One person wrote, ‘I’M VEGETARIAN.’

‘I’m sorry WHAT?’ asked someone else, while a third viewer added, ‘My whole life is a lie.’

What exactly is ‘beef flavoring’ made out of?

The ‘beef flavouring’ that McDonald’s cooks its fries in is somewhat of a mystery.

It’s actually not known what goes into McDonald’s beef flavouring, since ‘companies in the US are not required to disclose the ingredients in flavour additives if all components are considered generally recognised as safe by the Food and Drug Administration,’ according to ChooseVeganism.org.

All it says on McDonald’s website regarding the beef flavouring is that it contains wheat and milk, which are ‘both allergens and must be disclosed.’

While some beef flavourings are actually vegetarian, and are created using ‘the amino acids found in beef,’ Eater.com has pointed out that McDonald’s fries are not vegetarian nor vegan-certified, so the beef flavouring that the fast food chain uses does likely contain some type of meat.

‘Well, guess I’m not longer a vegetarian,’ a different comment read.

Another TikToker commented: ‘I’ve basically been eating meat all this time?’

Others confirmed his findings. Someone else wrote: ‘This is true, I went to culinary school with someone who worked there.’

Another user said: ‘As a former worker, this is true.’

Back in 2002, the company was sued for using beef tallow – which is a rendered form of beef fat – in its fries, and was ordered to issue and apology and fork over $10 million to vegetarian and religious groups for ‘misleading customers,’ the New York Times reported.

It then switched to using beef flavouring rather than beef tallow, but it is unclear if the beef flavouring has any actual meat in it.
