Long before the gourmet burgers, gravy loaded fries and healthy salads, McDonald’s Australia served up a very simple breakfast menu.

An old flyer has resurfaced on social media showing the vast difference between the prices of 1987 and 2019 – and my, how times have changed.

About 32 years ago, diners could order a ‘Big Breakfast’ for just $2.75, which included scrambled eggs, sausage, hash browns and a muffin.

Chad Bonello shared the breakfast menu in Old Shops Australia Facebook group after he found it hidden under a furniture in his manager’s office at a McDonald’s in Woodbine, in Sydney’s southwest in 2002.

The black-and-white coupon offered customers a free breakfast item if they made a purchase at McDonald’s Punchbowl store, which was valid until March 23, 1987.

‘To introduce you to our new breakfast menu we invite you to use this coupon and treat a friend to breakfast. Simply buy a breakfast item and it will be our pleasure to give you another of the same variety absolutely free,’ the flyer read.

And while most of the original breakfast meals remained the same, the price was very different.

Australians were stunned at the extremely low prices, including the Egg McMuffin, Sausage McMuffin with Egg and Scrambled Eggs and Muffin all costing $1.65 each and a hash brown for 60 cents.

Today, a Sausage and McMuffin costs $4.50 while a hash brown is $1.90.

Three hot cakes with syrup once cost diners just $1.65 – now they’re $4.45.

Social media users were reminiscing on the old menu, with many calling on the fast food chain to ‘bring back the Big Breakfast’.
