Thousands of spectators have been evacuated from the Melbourne Cricket Ground by a fire alarm during a packed AFL game.

The emergency alarm was sounded at the sports ground interrupting a match between the Collingwood Magpies and Adelaide Crows on Saturday.

Confused fans were directed by security to leave the stadium while players were instructed to move straight to the middle of the field.

The alarm was sparked by a small fire at a food outlet in the Ponsford stand.

MCG took to Twitter to reveal it had been a ‘false alarm’ and there was no threat to sports fans.

‘The fire alarm is a FALSE ALARM, and patrons are NOT required to evacuate,’ the organisation wrote.

‘You may return to your seats. MCG Social Media Team.’

Spectators appeared unfazed by the abrupt interruption and were quick to make light of the situation.

‘I know the Pies are on fire but cmon now,’ one wrote on Twitter.

Broadcaster Quentin Hull added: ‘Some may say we get a false alarm every season about Collingwood & Adelaide catching fire.’
