Mecca: The $184 perfume voted the BEST fragrance for 2018

In a world where there is a greater choice of fragrance than fresh fruit, it can be difficult to decide what to spend our money on.

To help consumers agonising over their next big perfume decision, Australian makeup mammoth MECCA released the results of this year’s Beauty Election, which saw more than 100,000 ‘glam’ junkies cast votes for their favourite products.

The twelve categories included mascara, foundation, cleanser and even the top choice in face masks, but the victor of the ‘best in scent’ accolade stood out from the rest.

Byredo, a modern European luxury house, has a variety of globally popular scents but Velvet Haze emerged as the Australian woman’s favourite in MECCA’s 2018 Beauty Elections

Cult favourite Byredo’s Velvet Haze eau du parfum took the coveted seat at the head of the fragrance table, and costs $184 for 50mL at MECCA online.

According to MECCA, just a single spritz of the EDP will ‘put you under its spell’ which partly explains how it claimed the crown.

Byredo describes Velvet Haze as a scent reminiscent of free-spirited California in the 1960s, transporting those who wear it to a different era through its heady blend of patchouli, cacao, coconut and musk.

A sister scent of Byredo’s success story Gypsy Water, Velvet Haze is intimate and akin to a warm embrace.

Drawing on icons such as Cher and Jimi Hendrix for inspiration, Velvet Haze received a 4.8/5 star rating from MECCA reviewers.

One customer said she receives compliments whenever she wears the perfume, while another called it ‘a stand out fragrance’ and ‘a delicious winter scent’.

‘Velvet Daze is daring, sweet, sexy and oozes psychedelic carefree charm. In love already, I didn’t think I’d go past Byredo Oliver Peoples or Bal D’Afrique but I’m sold,’ another wrote.

Celebrities are known to love Byredo, including Anne Hathaway who favours the brands Rose Noir scent and Taylor Swift who exclusively uses the Byredo Tree House Candle in her home.

Kate Bosworth is also a longtime Byredo devotee, opting for the cult favourite Gypsy Water which she described as ‘beautiful and complex, sexy and innocent.’
