A Good Samaritan has been hailed a hero after he rescued a 78-year-old woman who had broken down on the way back from a hospital appointment where she was told she had brain cancer.

Sam Altakrity, owner of Superb Civil Group in Revesby, south-western Sydney, was driving down Canterbury Road when he saw Lavina Martin in her car with her head in her hands.

The grandmother had just been told she had brain cancer before Mr Altakrity found her last week.

Sam Altakrity, owner of Superb Civil Group in Sydney’s south-west, was driving down Canterbury Road when he saw Lavina Martin in her car with her head in her hands (the pair are pictured together above)

And in a remarkable act of kindness Sam managed to get her car towed to a mechanic free of charge before giving her a huge bouquet of red roses.

Sam said: ‘I saw she had her face in her hands which was heart-breaking so I pulled up behind her, invited her into my car so she could sit in the air-conditioning, got her some water and called my mechanic.

‘The mechanic discovered the fuel pump had gone so I sourced one and the mechanic went and picked it up before installing it.’

Mr Altakrity stayed with Lavina for almost four and a half hours while the mechanic collected the fuel pump needed to repair her car.

He said: ‘I’d like to think someone would help my parents in the same situation so I just did what I could to help.’

Lavina said a lot motorists drove past her beeping their horns and only Sam had stopped to help.

She said: ‘Sam is one in a million.

‘When I got the car back it had been detailed and now looks like a new car and he wouldn’t take a cent for the repairs.’
