Meet the Victorian couple’s vegan dog who eats berries

A life spent eating luxurious fresh berries straight from the vine is something many people would dream of.

For one pampered pooch, it’s her reality.

Lily the Labrador gorges on fresh berries, bananas, cashew nuts and healthy home cooked meals, making up the crux of her vegan dog diet.

After switching to the vegan lifestyle four years ago, Shane and Adele Goodall decided to include their ‘baby’ Lily in the switch too.

‘It’s a controversial thing, as far as we’re concerned dogs are herbivores and there’s research to support that,’ Adele told Daily Mail Australia.

‘If she was unwell or really unhappy or not enjoying her food we’d be concerned but she’s thriving.

‘People still say ‘is she a puppy?’

Lily has been living on her plant-based ‘vegan’ diet for two years and her doting owners say she’s the healthiest she’s ever been.

From softer, shiner fur, fresher breath and regular bowel movements, Adele said they noticed a huge difference in their seven-and-a-half-year-old dog’s health.

‘She still has that really puppy attitude,’ she said.

While the Victorian couple have been hit with mixed responses, they say the vet doesn’t see anything wrong with Lily’s health.

‘We did a lot of research when we transitioned her … and our vet was saying a lot of dogs are vegan dogs,’ Adele told Daily Mail Australia.

‘One of oldest dogs to live was vegan, 25-years-old.’

As some people struggle to prepare their own weekly meals, Shane, an awarding winning chef, whips up huge batches of vegan food for himself and his wife, and of-course Lily.

Adele said they bulk up Lily’s ‘vegan dog food’ with cheap frozen vegetables from Coles mixed in with rice and grains.

For breakfast, Lily is treated to a dog version of ‘overnight oats’ which are made from oats, barley, soy, linseeds and chia seeds which is topped with banana and berries.

‘She goes crazy for bananas and she loves cashews,’ Adele said.

The couple say they buy in bulk to save money on the family’s home cooked meals.

‘I do keep telling Shane off for filling the freezer with all Lily’s food though,’ Adele said.

Despite Lily living off luxuriously healthy plant-based meals good enough for people to eat, her loving owners said they aren’t extensively strict on the lifestyle.

'We're not fanatical about it, if she was to go out and eat a certain but of meat we wouldn't lose sleep over it,' Adele said

While the pair were in Europe, their Labrador, who wore a pearl necklace when she was the ring-bearer at the couple’s wedding, was dog sat by Adele’s mother and fed meat.

‘We’re not fanatical about it, if she was to go out and eat a certain bit of meat we wouldn’t lose sleep over it,’ Adele told Daily Mail Australia.

‘But we noticed a big difference in her health, she wasn’t herself.

‘When we were back feeding her [a vegan diet] again, she felt a lot better.’

Just as Lily gets treated to her healthy lifestyle, Adele and Shane create extravagant vegan meals for themselves.

Everything from cheese boards and raw cakes to curries and Mexican food, the husband-wife duo share their vibrant creations through their blog ‘Geetroit Foodie’.

Adele, an aesthetic laser specialist, said their family members were even tricked into thinking their plant-based meals had real meat.

The pair showcase their visually pleasing creations in the backdrop of their home town of Geelong, Victoria, where they are working on a cook book set to be released next year with more than 100 vegan recipes.

‘It goes against the grain with what we’ve been brought up to believe,’ Adele said.

‘We certainly aren’t those righteous sort of vegans.

‘We feel amazing… and now we can’t imagine eating any other way.’
