The Duchess of Sussex is ‘planning to adopt a rescue dog’ for her son Archie to grow up with, it emerged today.

Animal lover Meghan is reportedly set to look around rescue centres to find a pet for her two-month-old son.

The 37-year-old former actress is a Patron of The Mayhew Animal Home in London and previously spoke about the ‘life-changing joy’ adopting a pet can bring.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex already have two dogs at Frogmore Cottage in Windsor, including Meghan’s beloved rescue beagle Guy.

The former actress had two rescue dogs, a beagle named Guy and a Labrador-shepherd mix called Bogart. While Guy came to the UK with Meghan when she moved from Toronto to live with Harry - and has since been spotted riding with the Queen - Bogart was too old to travel and had to stay behind with friends

Meghan was left devastated when she was forced to leave her other rescue dog, a labrador-shepherd mix Bogart, in Toronto when she moved to the UK to live with Prince Harry.

Now the Duchess ‘really wants a dog with whom Archie can associate his childhood,’ a source told The Sun.

In January Meghan visited The Mayhew Animal Home and was particularly taken by a one-year-old Jack Russell cross named Minnie who was set to go up for adoption.

She wanted to take her home but said: ‘We can’t take another dog before the baby as our hands are too full!’

In June she wrote about the ‘life-changing joy’ of adopting a pet as she urged people to support the Mayhew Animal Home, in a foreword to the charity’s annual report

She penned: ‘As a proud rescue dog owner, I know from personal experience the joy that adopting an animal into your home can bring.

‘The role that we, as people, play in rehoming and rescuing these animals is vital, but the role of organisations such as Mayhew is unparalleled.’

The mother-of-one went on to urge readers to support the animal welfare charity in ‘whatever way they can’ – be it through adoption, volunteering, donation or spreading the word.

‘The choice to adopt a pet is a big decision that comes with much responsibility but infinite return on investment,’ she added. ‘It will undoubtedly change your life.’

At the weekend the royal couple shared two pictures from Archie’s christening with their near 9 million followers, posting that they felt ‘so happy to share the joy of this day with members of the public’ and thanking supporters for their kindness.

It comes after a backlash over their insistence that the ceremony would remain private and the identities of Archie’s godparents would not be revealed.

In the monochrome image, Meghan was seen gazing into Harry’s eyes as the proud father looked down at Archie, while placing a hand on his wife’s arm.

Just 25 guests were present at the baptism, which saw Archie Harrison Mountbatten Windsor christened in a private chapel at Windsor Castle.
