The Duchess of Sussex wore glittering ‘fallen star’ earrings signifying ‘protection from evil’ for her final private engagement in the UK as a senior royal.

Meghan Markle, 38, in her role as patron of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), chatted with Commonwealth scholars at Buckingham Palace before the Commonwealth Service at Westminster Abbey on Monday.

Photographs released from the meeting yesterday revealed the royal, who is known for her love of highly personalised jewellery, selected £450 Fallen Star Hoop earrings by designer Sophie Lis for the occasion.

The jewels are described online as signifying ‘good luck, good health, faith, success and protection from evil’.

In the newly-released photographs of the event, Meghan, who was wearing a £330 crepe knit navy cap-sleeve dress with neck scarf detail by Australian designer Scanlan Theodore, could be seen listening to one scholar.

In another, she posed with the scholars for a group photo in the 1844 Room of the Queen’s London home.

The duchess swept her hair into a chic ponytail to reveal the dainty pieces at the event, and teamed her outfit with navy stiletto heels.

They feature a dangling North star, made from gold and white diamonds, to symbolise ‘guidance and direction.’

Meghan has long favoured delicate gold jewellery and has become known for selecting highly personal pieces for royal appearances.

She has often worn pendants with the initials of Prince Harry and their son Archie.

The royal wore another piece by the same designer to her visit to the National Theatre gallery last Thursday.

The medallion carried the engraving ‘Qu’hier’ after a diamond encrusted plus sign, and ‘Que Demain’ followed by a ruby minus sign.

Online, Sophie revealed the message is borrowed from the poem ‘The Eternal Song’.

The reference is an an ode from the 19th century French poet Rosemonde Gérard which translates to: ‘Every day I love you more, more than yesterday less than tomorrow.’

Meghan was made royal patron of ACU in January 2019, taking over from the Queen, who held the post for 33 years.

After walking away from the monarchy on March 31, the duchess will continue her links to ACU as patron.

The Commonwealth Day service was Harry and Meghan’s final hurrah as senior royals before they bow out and embrace their new life in North America – after announcing their intention to quit in January.

From March 31, the monarch’s grandson and American former actress Meghan will no longer use their HRH styles as they pursue a new life of personal and financial freedom.

Meghan is reported to have flown back to Canada soon after the Commonwealth Service.
