Meghan Trainor says nurses suggested her antidepressants were to blame for son’s health issues

Meghan Trainor has claimed that NICU nurses suggested her antidepressants were to blame for her son’s health problems after he was born with breathing issues.

Meghan, 28, and her husband, Daryl Sabara, 30, welcomed their son Riley, now 16 months, in February 2021 – but when the newborn had trouble breathing and staying awake long enough to feed and had to be admitted to the NICU, the singer said the staff members made her feel like it was her fault that something had gone wrong.

She told Romper magazine that they insinuated the medicine she had taken during her pregnancy was to blame, despite her own doctors doctors telling her it was safe.

‘[The nurses] kept asking me if I was on antidepressants during the pregnancy, and I was, but on the lowest dose possible, and all my doctors said it was safe and wouldn’t affect him,’ she recalled.

‘It was really f**ked up. They had no name for what was wrong. He just wouldn’t wake up.

‘They said, “It’s really up to Riley when he wants to wake up.” I’d be like, “Really? Can’t you just zap him and get him up?”‘

She previously told Mother.ly that Riley was taken to the NICU moments after his birth, which was ‘terrifying’ for her.

‘It was one of those horror stories where he didn’t cry. He didn’t make noise when he came out,’ she said.

‘I was like, “Why isn’t he crying?” Then they told me he was having breathing issues. It was terrifying.

‘I got to see him for one second before they took him away. That was probably the worst part. It was definitely a rough start. But we’re so lucky we got to bring him home.’

After spending five days in the hospital, Riley was sent home – but for the first month of his life, the All About That Bass songstress admitted that she was worried that something bad was going to happen to him, especially because he didn’t show very much emotion.

‘We kept being like, “Uh oh, what’s up with him? Is this what serial killers are like when they’re first born? They never cry?”‘ she told Romper.

'He literally fed me, and tested my blood with me, and would get everything ready for me. I was like, "You’re so f**king cute." I even got foot massages every night,' she gushed of her husband

She said her face also ‘broke out with dermatitis,’ which resulted in ‘eczema all over her mouth.’

She also suffers from gestational diabetes, so she had to ‘test her blood all day long.’

However, she got through it with the help of her husband, who she said went above and beyond to make her more comfortable.

‘I just felt not great, and like he was going to hurt the baby, but he loved me anyway, and we did other stuff.’

Since welcoming their son, who is now completely healthy, Daryl told the outlet that ‘life has only gotten better’ for them.

‘This feels cheesy, but it’s made me feel more like myself,’ he said of becoming a dad.

'It’s everything I ever dreamed of,' Meghan gushed of parenting. 'Years ago, when people asked, "Where do you see yourself in 10 years?" I’m like, "Right here"'

‘I honestly think I was born to be one, which is weird. It’s like I almost don’t know what I was doing with my life before Riley.’

And Meghan couldn’t agree more. ‘It’s everything I ever dreamed of,’ she gushed of parenting.

‘Years ago, when people asked, “Where do you see yourself in 10 years?” I’m like, “Right here.” But I never even thought it could be this good.

‘I get to be a pop star during the day and then give my kid a bath at night? It’s like, pinch me.’

However, like many other moms, Meghan still has her insecurities. Just recently, she said she had a ‘meltdown’ because Riley stopped saying ‘mama’ all the time, and instead, started saying ‘dada’ a lot more.

But she leans on the help of her family – her two brothers, Ryan and Justin, live in her house, while her mom resides just 20 minutes away.

She also has her friends – like fellow moms Hilary Duff and Ashley Tisdale – in her support circle.

‘The other day I texted them like, “My butt is acting up,” and someone sent me their butt doctor – literally saved my a**,’ she joked.

‘I was just with Hailey Beiber and was like, “The best thing you can do when you have a baby is find a group of moms and join them.” It’s our lifelines.’
