A chemical spill on a cargo plane has sparked a massive clean-up operation, with dozens of firefighters rushed to the scene.

Six or seven fire trucks were seen on the tarmac during the clean-up at Melbourne Airport early Wednesday morning.

The five-litre spill occurred on an inbound flight from Brisbane, but has not affected the airport’s operations.

Melbourne Airport spokesman Grant Smith said it could be sometime before the hazardous material was cleaned up, as it was inside railings on the plane.

The spill may have come from a canister on the aircraft, and Ambulance Victoria attended the scene along with the Metropolitan Fire Brigade.

No injuries have been reported, and flights are not expected to be affected by the spill, which happened away from runways, The Herald Sun reported.
