Shocking CCTV footage has emerged of the moment a man was struck down and severely injured by his own car after as he attempted to stop it from being stolen.

The man was parked outside restaurants and bars in Melbourne’s busy Hardware Lane at about 3pm on Thursday when he was carjacked and left fighting for life in hospital.

The footage showed a man in a blue jacket riding a scooter and inspecting the red Ford 4WD.

The man in the blue jacket folded up his scooter which he placed into the car before he jumped into the driver’s seat.

The victim and a woman, who were packing boxes into a trolley in front of the car, noticed the man and attempted to stop him from driving away.

But the thief continued driving as the victim clings for dear life onto the front of the car.

Shocked bystanders were seen rushing to help the victim, but the car continues driving with the victim being dragged along the front.
