Melbourne hospital evacuated after electrical fire

A fire has caused the rushed evacuation of the women’s and children’s wing of Melbourne’s Sunshine Hospital in the city’s west.

Fire Rescue Victoria was called to Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hosptial at at the Sunshine state at about 9.30am on Sunday after reports of a fire.

’22 women and 12 babies were safely relocated to other areas of the hospital,’ Western Health Chief Operating Officer John Ferraro said.

There were no injuries to patients or staff.

‘This will have no impact to hospital services, including maternity, or women planning to give birth at the hospital in the coming days.

‘The cause of the fire is under investigation, however it is not being treated as suspicious.’

The fire was extinguished within five minutes, with 19 firefighters attending.

Firefighters remained on scene to ventilate the area as some smoke logging occurred.

Worksafe Victoria, Energy Safe Victoria and Maribyrnong Council Health Inspector have been notified of the Incident.
