Letterboxes and rubbish bins have been destroyed in a series of mysterious explosions that rocked three Melbourne suburbs overnight.

The first blast startled residents of James Street in Northcote, in the city’s north, on Sunday when a bin blew up at about 8.25pm.

A second bin exploded half an hour later at 9pm on Maltravers Road in Ivanhoe, just one suburb east of the first incident.

Ten minutes later, an explosive device that was placed inside washing machine and stationed on the back of a ute detonated on Kilby Road in Kew East, south of the initial blasts.

The ute sustained severe damage and was towed for forensic testing.

No one was injured in any of the incidents and the investigation is ongoing.

Detectives from Darebin Crime Investigation Unit will work with detectives from Boroondara and Banyule to work out if the incidents are linked.
