A man has admitted to the brutal murder of a Melbourne mother, just hours before his trial was due to begin.

The guilty plea comes just hours before his Supreme Court trial was expected to start.

Ms Blackwood was discovered bleeding to death on a couch in her home by her twin 11-year-old daughters when they returned from school in August 2013.

She suffered multiple stab wounds to her neck and chest.

The killing was believed to be a robbery gone wrong, a pre-trial court hearing was told.

Murdoch, a father-of-two, was arrested three years after the killing when he was identified as a possible match to DNA found on Ms Blackwood’s jeans.

Ms Blackwood, a popular figure in the semi-rural town, left behind her daughters, a 13-year-old son and her husband Peter.

Murdoch, who faced court dressed in jeans and sneakers, is due to appear before Justice Jane Dixon again on August 16 before being sentenced.
