Peak-hour traffic has been thrown into chaos after a ute travelling at 100km/h slammed into a taxi and two other cars.

The high-speed collision, which occurred in extreme fog on Dynon Road in West Melbourne on Friday morning, caused the car to flip twice. 

Witnesses said the ute was going over 100km/h when it hit the taxi and smashed into two other vehicles about 6.30am.

All lanes of Dynon Road have been blocked off close to the CityLink exit ramp, and drivers are urged to avoid the area.

The driver has been taken to hospital and is in a serious condition, Nine News reported.

VicRoads has urged motorists to use Footscray Road to avoid the traffic chaos caused by the crash.

Drivers have also been asked to exercise caution as the thick morning fog reduces visibility.

The fog is expected to burn off later in the day, with sunny weather and a high of 21C forecast for Melbourne on Friday.
