Melbourne suburb banned from naming street after Lannister

The developers of a new suburb whose street names have been inspired by hit show Game of Thrones have been forced to change one named after the Lannisters.

Roads in Charlemont Rise in Geelong include Winterfell Road, Stannis Street and Baelish Drive.

But Lannaster Road has been changed to Precinct Road after a complaint from a neighbouring estate because of the incest reference.

‘They objected to the fact that it had a reference to incest… it’s a fictional series,’ project manager Gary Smith told the Geelong Advertiser.

Jaime and Cersei Lannister are twins who are in an incestuous relationship on the HBO show, now in its seventh season.

He added that he had even changed to spelling from Lannister to Lannaster to make the reference less obvious.

‘We wanted it for our shopping centre strip because it is easy to remember and rolls off the tongue.’

However, the Office of Geographic Names found that the chosen name was not complaint with the rules, which stipulate that they must not cause offence to the general public.

The new name, Precinct Road, is a reference to the shopping precinct, Mr Smith said.

‘We wanted original names as everything is already taken in Geelong, you have to think outside the circle,’ he said.

He added that the only other complaints had been from Game of Thrones fans eager to live on Lannaster Street who were disappointed that the name had been changed.
