Melissa Doyle says she would ‘move on’ if a bloke was a ‘bit sexist’

Melissa Doyle has revealed she wouldn’t speak up if a male colleague said something a ‘bit sexist’ in the newsroom.

The Sunday Night host said she wouldn’t want to make a ‘throwaway line’ about a situation that made her feel uncomfortable as it would ‘take away’ from the experiences of sexual harassment victims.

‘It is a blokey environment, and you hear some people speak to and about women in a way different to others,’ the 48-year-old told Stellar magazine.

The former Sunrise presenter continued: ‘I wouldn’t want to make a throwaway line about being in a situation that didn’t have as much gravity as [what] somebody else has gone through.

‘I feel that takes away from their experience. If blokes say something in a newsroom that’s a bit sexist, I say move on.’

Doyle used bullying as an example – claiming there’s a difference between a child who gets ‘picked on’ and a child who is bullied.

She said she wouldn’t want to ‘make too big a deal’ about someone who was picked on as that would take the attention away from a bullied child.

The mother-of-two also stressed that she has never endured abuse or harassment during her career.

However, Melissa did reveal earlier this month that she was once told by an industry executive that she was ‘too ordinary’ for television.

Speaking on Nova’s In Her Own Words podcast about sexism in the workplace, she revealed she had once been shut down by a male colleague.

‘He said to me, “You’ll never be a presenter – you just don’t have it”,’ she recalled.

‘You don’t have the looks, you don’t have the voice, just stick to being an ordinary journalist and be happy with that.’
