Melissa Leong addresses her shock career move after her dramatic exit from MasterChef Australia

Melissa Leong is fronting a new three-part documentary series about Australia’s health system.

The TV star, 42, is set to appear in the new SBS docuseries The Hospital: In The Deep End which will air Thursday June 6.

Melissa will feature alongside Samuel Johnson and Costa Georgiadis.

The program will see the trio spend time with medical professionals at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney to further understand health challenges in Australia.

The former MasterChef Australia judge told TV WEEK that filming the series was challenging.

‘I would go back to where I was staying and just sit in the bath and stare at the wall, to be honest with you,’ she said.

‘You’re seeking any kind of comfort to just bring you back into your body because it’s such an emotional experience.’

Leong revealed she wanted to take part in the program so she could get an insight into her mother’s career as a nurse.

‘Spending time in the emergency department certainly gave me a brief glimpse into what she did,’ she explained.

‘I think she’s (her mother) such a tremendously empathetic person. A lot of my inspiration for how I want to be in my life, I take from her,’ she added.

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph in October, the journalist and food critic described the show as ‘full of heart’ and ‘incredible people’ who are committed to saving lives.

The food critic was dropped from MasterChef Australia last year amid rumours of a feud between herself and fellow judges Andy Allen and the late Jock Zonfrillo, which she has denied.

She went on to host MasterChef spinoff series Dessert Masters alongside Amaury Guichon.

Her enthusiasm was palpable when recently speaking to Daily Mail Australia about her new hosting gig on Dessert Masters, describing it as a ‘dream come true’.

Additionally, she announced that she would be hosting UFC Fight Week on Kayo Sports and Foxtel.
