A 64-year-old man has been belted over the head with a metal tyre lever by two men who broke into his Newcastle unit and then robbed a taxi driver as they fled.
NSW Police said the men, aged 24 and 34, forced their way into a Merewether home on Monday afternoon, assaulted the man and hailed a taxi outside the complex.
The 37-year-old cab driver was forced to hand over money, along with the PIN to his ATM card, police said.
The pair was arrested less than two kilometres away at a hotel.
They will face Newcastle Local Court on Tuesday charged with numerous offences.
