Merseyside Police on high alert ahead of Man City’s trip to Anfield after their bus was attacked in 2018 and 2022… but Premier League champions’ coach will follow the usual route before Liverpool clash

  • Liverpool host Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday afternoon
  • City’s bus has been pelted with missiles on previous visits to Anfield

Merseyside Police will place extra focus on Manchester City’s bus route into Anfield following a spate of attacks on opposition coaches.

Mail Sport understands that Pep Guardiola and his side will take the usual route to Liverpool’s ground for Sunday’s title showdown.

On previous occasions their transport has been pelted with missiles launched by home supporters as part of a feisty so-called ‘welcome’ to Anfield.

And in December Manchester United’s bus was hit and damaged by a glass cider bottle as Eric ten Hag’s man made their way to the stadium ahead of a 0-0 draw.

Liverpool strongly condemned the attack, a video of which was posted online. Police later arrested a 23-year-old man from the Everton area.

Tensions between Liverpool and City have risen in recent years as they have often battled it out for Premier League glory.

After a series of incidents at the Etihad Stadium which included a teenage girl being hit by a beer pot filled with coins, City reduced the allocation for traveling Liverpool supporters.

It is understood that City’s allocation for this fixture will be fewer than normal – but that this is down to ongoing work on the Anfield Rd expansion rather than a tit-for-tat measure.

Police have been speaking to both clubs ahead of the fixture and say they have a ‘robust’ plan in place to deal with any troublemakers.

Chief Inspector Kevin Chatterton, match commander for the game, said: ‘We have been working closely with the two football clubs and supporters’ groups for this Sunday’s match at Anfield.

‘As with every football match we have a robust policing in place.

‘Any disorderly behaviour will not be tolerated, and we will take action to identify and bring to justice anyone found responsible for committing offensive and disorderly behaviour.’
