New York Mets suffer another injury blow as Brandon Nimmo hobbles off just days after their $102m pitcher Edwin Diaz got hurt and had surgery

New York Mets star Brandon Nimmo suffered an injury scare during a spring training win over Miami in Port St. Lucie.

Nimmo awkwardly slid into second base with the Mets up 6-1 at the bottom of the fourth inning.

Resultantly, he writhed in pain and could not initially get up on his own, requiring assistance from medical staff before hobbling to the dugout.

Mets manager Buck Showalter was confident the right ankle injury is nothing particularly serious, dismissing the necessity of an x-ray while talking to reporters postgame.

Nimmo is receiving an MRI on the injured ankle Saturday. The 29-year-old signed an eight-year, $162m extension with New York this offseason to continue his career as a one-club man.

The center fielder’s injury follows a tough week for the organization after star closer Edwin Diaz suffered a likely season-ending injury during celebrations following a Puerto Rico win at the World Baseball Classic, Wednesday.

Diaz left in a wheelchair following a right knee patellar tendon injury postgame Wednesday night.

He has since had surgery, with his timeline to return reported to sit at approximately eight months.

Mets fans were left as distraught after the relief pitcher – who just re-signed with New York to the tune of a five-year, $102million deal – was listed as a likely out for the MLB season.

‘To all my beloved fans, especially the Mets fans, I want to let you know that I am doing well and healing,’ Diaz wrote on his social media platforms late Thursday night.

‘I feel blessed and grateful for your support with messages and prayers, thank you very much!

‘I can’t wait to see you guys in NY again and play those trumpets.’
