Mexico fan is arrested for launching a FIREWORK at police officers while celebrating World Cup win

A World Cup celebration in Southern California ended with a man getting arrested after police said he launched a firework at officers who were patrolling the area. 

Jose Alberto Martinez, 39, was taken into custody on Sunday for firing a mortar-style firework into a line of Huntington Park police officers.

The incident was captured on a cell phone video and posted on Twitter. 

In the footage, Martinez is seen bending down in the middle of the street with the firework in his hand. 

He then runs a few feet and launches the projectile at the officers.

Cops had to move out of the way to avoid being hit. Martinez was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. 

‘People like that should not do that,’ business owner Robert Maestro told KTLA. He said the attack was uncalled for and could have messed ‘it up for the other people who just want to have fun’.  

CBS Los Angeles reports that another man, 19-year-old Manuel Mendez Garcia, was also arrested Sunday for reckless driving and leading police on a pursuit. 

Besides the two arrests, celebrations on Sunday were peaceful as fans took to the streets in Mexico and Southern California to revel in Mexico’s 1-0 upset against Germany. 

Mexico will next play South Korea in the Wold Cup on June 23.
