Micah Richards lauds Gabriel Jesus’ ‘sensational’ home debut and says the former Man City star is a ‘different player’ at Arsenal – after £45m summer signing’s brace sank Leicester

  • Micah Richards heaped praise on Mikel Arteta’s new signing following the win

  • The 25-year-old joined Arsenal for a fee of £45million over the summer

Micah Richards has showered Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus with praise after the Brazilian striker produced a sensational performance as the Gunners defeated Leicester 4-2 at the Emirates.

Jesus scored twice on his home debut for Mikel Arteta’s side, and was unlucky not to have completed his hat trick in the six-goal thriller.

Following the game Richards hailed Jesus’ ‘sensational’ performance, and said he was as a ‘different player’ compared to his time at Manchester City:

Micah Richards hailed Gabriel Jesus’ ‘brilliant’ performance in Arsenal’s win over Leicester

‘He was sensational. Everything he did was brilliant.

‘I watched him at Manchester City, but at Arsenal he seems a different player,’ Richards added.

‘He seems a lot more confident. He was so unlucky not to get his hat-trick. He’s got everything in his game.’

Despite winning four Premier League titles during his time with the Citizens, Jesus failed to find a consistent place in the starting eleven under Pep Guardiola, with the Spanish boss often preferring to use him as an impact player from the bench.

At Arsenal however, in just two league appearances Jesus has established himself as one of the key players at the Gunners, as Arteta looks to build on the club’s fifth-placed finish last season.

Richards explained his delight in seeing the Brazil international demonstrating his class at his new club:

‘I’m just happy for him because at Man City he gave so much in terms of work rate, but now it feels he is the main man. A great day for him, it really was.’

Speaking after the win, Arteta explained that despite his exceptional performance in front of goal, his star man was lamenting missed chances.

‘We know what Gabi can do,’ said Arteta.

‘He is disappointed in the dressing room because he said he could have scored four. That is the standard, that is the mentality you need. I would not like to play against him. So mobile, so intuitive, always sharp. He lifts the standards, the way he is training every day.’

Arsenal will look to continue their unbeaten start to the Premier League season when they travel to newly-promoted Bournemouth on Saturday.
