Platini was Johansson’s successor as president of the European football governing body, but he lost his position as in 2015 over breaches of FIFA’s ethics code.

Just last week Platini was held in custody and questioned by French anti-corruption investigators over the awarding of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar and Euro 2016 to France.

The 64-year-old was released from custody in the early hours of last Wednesday morning after being quizzed as part of a corruption investigation.

The investigation is understood to centre on claims that Platini’s support of Qatar’s World Cup bid was the result of political negotiations conducted by former France president Nicolas Sarkozy.

Platini recently spoke of his desire to return to football when his four-year ban — over a £1.35million payment authorised by disgraced former FIFA president Sepp Blatter — expires in October.

Platini denied any wrongdoing and French authorities did not announce any charges against the former Juventus player.
