Michelle Obama says she has been trying to be less ‘critical’ of her two daughters now that she’s gotten to ‘the other side of parenting’ and has moved ‘from mom-in-chief to advisor-in-chief.’
The former First Lady, 59, opened up about her relationship with Malia, 24, and Sasha, 21, during the first episode of her brand-new The Light Podcast, which premiered earlier this week.
Michelle dished on how motherhood changed as her daughters got older while chatting to her first guest, Today show host Hoda Kotb, and she said it was much easier now that they’re all grown up.
‘I’m on the other side of parenting. I’m moving from mom-in-chief to advisor-in-chief,’ she explained.

‘That’s a lovely thing – to be able to watch my girls fly and have the relief that “OK, I think I didn’t mess them up.”‘
The 59-year-old explained that she’s now focused on not using a ‘critical eye’ with her daughters.
‘Our kids just want our gladness. They don’t need us to fix them,’ she added.
‘They don’t need us to point out the thing that’s wrong, first.’

She added that it was ‘hard on my daughters growing up in the spotlight,’ but that she didn’t want to seem ‘ungrateful.’
While chatting with Good Morning America last year, Michelle was asked about the best part of getting older – and she said it was watching her daughters turn into ‘adults.’
The mother-of-two gushed about the joys of seeing them ‘become themselves,’ as she revealed the sisters invited her and her husband, former President Barack Obama, over for ‘weak martinis’ during the former First Couple’s 30th anniversary ‘honeymoon’ in October.
Michelle and Barack, 61, officially marked the occasion on October 3, and to commemorate the milestone, they decided to re-create their honeymoon by traveling along the coast of California.
Along the way, the couple stopped to visit their two daughters who recently moved into an apartment together in Los Angeles.

Sasha and Malia (seen in 2019) recently moved into an apartment in LA together. Michelle said: ‘It feels good to know the two girls you raised find solace at a kitchen table with one another’
According to Michelle, her two daughters tried to play host for their parents by preparing a ‘charcuterie tray,’ along with some cocktails.
But things quickly went awry when the sisters realized they didn’t have any of the ingredients they needed to make the appetizer tray and the martinis came out ‘weak.’
‘They had invited us over before dinner to have cocktails at their apartment and they had prepared a charcuterie tray and tried to make two very weak martinis,’ she recalled, while chatting to host Robin Roberts last November.
‘They realized they didn’t have any of the ingredients, but they were trying to, they were hosting us. And it’s just fun, watching them become themselves.’
Malia – who is currently working on Donald Glover’s upcoming unnamed Amazon show – moved to the West Coast in 2021, after graduating from Harvard University, to pursue a career as a screenwriter.
As for Sasha, she transferred to the University of Southern California from the University of Michigan last year, where she started her final year in September.
Michelle told People last year that they have a booming family group chat – and that ‘typical dad’ Barack is the most active in it. The family is seen in 2015
She admitted that she and her husband do worry about their daughters sometimes, explaining, ‘You have these weird panic thoughts that your girls are out living in this messy world’
She also spoke to People last year about how she keeps in contact with her daughters, despite them living almost 3,000 miles away from her, and she explained that they have a booming family group chat – and that ‘typical dad’ Barack is the most active in it.
She admitted that she and her husband do worry about their daughters sometimes, but that they’re happy they opted to live together.
‘You have these weird panic thoughts that your girls are out living in this messy world,’ she said.
‘And so, you think about crazy things you want to make sure you tell them. It’s like, “Remember, don’t walk alone at night.”
‘Barack sent them an email about earthquake preparedness because they’re living in California. He’s a big article sender, and we all just read ’em and laugh.
‘But yeah, it feels good to know that the two girls you raised find solace at a kitchen table with one another. It’s like the one thing you want for them.’
