Recreational cannabis users excitingly stood in massive lines on Sunday as Michigan became the first state in the Midwest to offer legal sales of marijuana.  

Michigan voters decided more than a year ago to make the state the 10th in the country to sell cannabis recreationally. 

State officials issued 18 licences to businesses which legally began selling the drug on Sunday, WXYZ reports.

Dispensaries in Ann Arbor were among the first to start selling, with on store – Exclusive Provisioning Centers – sharing photos and videos of long lines wrapped around their facilities. 

The Ann Arbor dispensary opened its doors off Varsity Drive and Arbors Wellness at 10am and remained open until 9pm. 

‘Thank you to everyone who came out and made history with us yesterday! Exclusive Ann Arbor is here to make clean, tested marijuana accessible to everyone,’ the dispensary said in an Instagram post. ‘Prohibition is over. Recreational is here.’

Michigan officials will allow licensed retailers to move 50 percent of their medical products – that have been in inventory for at least 30 days – over to their recreational sides. 

Other cities in the state – including Ferndale – are currently waiting for the green light to start selling their products. 

Some 1,400 communities across the state have opted to not sell recreational cannabis.
