Mick Molloy says he was ‘rocked’ when his childhood best friend Darren Chow was given five years to live after cancer diagnosis: ‘There’s nothing without him’

Mick Molloy has revealed how his best friend Darren Chow broke the news that he had cancer.

The comedian and radio star, 56, says that the pair – who has been friends since they were ten years old – were watching television when Darren told him that he was ill.

‘We were watching footy in a bar one day and he casually turned to me and said, “I’ve got cancer”. It was an absolute body blow,’ Mick told The Herald Sun.

‘I couldn’t quite process it. I was rocked,’ he went on.

‘I was upset because we’ve been through a lot of s**t together. I always thought, ‘We’re gonna do this forever’, then all of a sudden, there’s a punch in the face.’

The postman, who is close friends with the radio star and comedian, was given just five years to live.

Darren at first considered not getting any treatment, but sought help when he saw his devastated partner’s reaction.

‘Chowy has been in every part of my life since grade 5. There’s nothing without him’ Mick told the paper.

‘We played footy, we played cricket, we’ve travelled overseas. If I had to pick one person in the world to go into the trenches with, who I trusted with my life, it would be this man here.’

Darren has since been given the all-clear and is back to feeling like himself.

In July Mick revealed he was going back to comedy before a live audience after starting on the stage way back in 1987.

The funnyman will join comedians Sam Pang, Lawrence Mooney and Marty Sheargold in a new live show reports The Herald Sun.

The group, calling themselves The Comedians have announced shows in Melbourne, Hobart and Sydney for November.

‘It’s a very real, brutal form of entertainment,’ Molloy said in an interview with the publication.

‘As a comedian, there aren’t many opportunities to hear people laughing at you.’
