Microsoft is quietly axing a popular app – and disappointed fans call it the ‘end of an era’

It’s a favourite app among budding artists.

But Microsoft is quietly axing Paint 3D later this year, a leaker has revealed.

The news was first reported by famed leaker ‘phantomofearth’, who spotted a banner in the Paint 3D app.

‘Paint 3D now has a banner stating that it will no longer receive updates or be available in the Microsoft Store starting on November 4th,’ they posted on X (formerly Twitter).

The news has not gone down well with fans of the app, with one calling it the ‘end of an era’.

Unlike its predecessor, Paint, the app allowed users to create three-dimensional masterpieces that they could play with from every angle.

‘Whether you’re an artist or just want to try out some doodles, Paint 3D makes it easy to unleash your creativity and bring your ideas to life,’ a description reads on the Microsoft Store.

Now, some users have started to see a banner displayed within the app that confirms it will soon be culled.

‘Paint 3D won’t be available in the Microsoft Store or receive future updates starting on November 4, 2024,’ the banner reads.

In response to phantomofearth’s tweets, several fans have replied to express their disappointment at the news.

‘It’s a shame, honestly. They could’ve integrate it to the regular Paint,’ one user wrote.

Another added: ‘It’s better than classic MS Paint, and has no AI or MS accounts unlike the new Paint. This is just good, and it must live on.’

And one joked: ‘Paint was to be replaced with Paint 3D, now Paint 3D will be replaced with Paint lol.’

If you already have Paint 3D installed on your PC, thankfully it’s likely the app will continue to work beyond November 4.

However, from that date it will no longer be avaiable to download from the Microsoft Store, and will no longer receive updates.

The news comes shortly after Microsoft confirmed that the Start Menu on Windows 11 will soon have adverts.

Microsoft says the ads are aimed to enable users to find ‘some of the great apps that are available’.

In the notes on the update, the firm writes: ‘The Recommended section of the Start menu will show some Microsoft Store apps.

‘These apps come from a small set of curated developers.’
